I've been on Zoloft (250mg) for years now. It is rough on an empty stomach. It helped me for years, and saved my life/marriage/relationships when I first started on it. I never noticed any side-effects from it except when I first started and was not on a mood stabilizer. It bumped me up a little too high. Missing a dose or two could result in an odd and difficult to describe feeling; kind of like being zapped.

I have been having a really rough time lately and had a pdoc visit yesterday during which we decided to switch to Effexor. I'll see how Effexor treats me. Best of luck with it, and let me know if you have any questions I could help with.
