It's a bit uncomfortable at first, but if you practice the breathing exercise, when you're not having an anxiety attack, you kind of get used to it. Plus believe it or not the counting is a good mental distraction. You need to count the beats for each state of the breath, as well as count to 25 repeats, which is harder than it sounds. I think that's why it works for well for me. The deep slow breathing calms me physically and the counting distracts my mind.
