Sometimes people also compare because they want to be understood. They want their struggles to be acknowledged, sometimes because they need/want support or because they want to offer support.

Of course, some people compare because they want to minimize other people's problems, but it doesn't sound like that's the case here. Sounds like they just want to be understood and want to offer support.
