A psychiatric therapist cannot diagnose a patient, as that can only be done by a doctor (medical or psychiatric), in the U.S. anyway.

That said, doctors often rely upon professional input provided by therapists (or psychologists), as they are often the ones that provide regular care with the patient. IMO, both are important. Just in different ways.
