In the denial of expertise we frequently tell ourselves that everyone is equally gifted with knowledge and that the ‘experts’ are, somehow, ignorant of their fields.

Certainly survivors of unethical therapy have every right to ‘share their hurt,’ — but feeding into that “I’m old enough to make up my mind,” mold, and the I’ll “decide that for myself,” goes back to the “I’m smarter than the experts,” mold.

Yes, I’m a product of 33 years of psychiatric care. You may need no psychiatric therapy intervention but many come here with concerns about therapy and might be turned away by the harmful and unethical sobriquets.

I don’t believe that most — or many — psychotherapists are unethical or harmful. That’s really the main message that I want to get across.
