If possible doing anything that will occupy my mind on something else even if I know it is obsessive in nature (for me researching works, sometimes I research something related to how I am feeling, like attachment in psychotherapy; sometimes it is a topic of interest in science or math, sometimes it will be a hobby thing like fantasy football or genealogy.) The key for me here isn't a focus to try to feel better but just to help time pass.
I also look to my world of self care and try to pick the safest one, recognizing that all my behaviors are a form of trying to take care of myself, some are just safer than others.
