It really doesn't matter. A DSM stickler would diagnose me with SZA, but literally every pdoc I've had doesn't diagnose SZA because it's the same thing as bipolar with psychosis. Yes, I know in sza you have psychosis outside of mood episodes, but either way you're going to want an antipsychotic so. Sza and bipolar with psychosis are closer than bipolar I and bipolar II IMHO. The only difference is the general public doesn't have a clue what schizoaffective is, and if they look it up you have more stigma against you.
I was worried about being misdiagnosed too (pretty sure most of my symptoms are caused by lasting damage from TBI), but everyone here reassured me that it doesn't matter as long as I have an adequate bandaid.
