My psych nurse recommended Depression: The Common Sense Approach by Tony Bates. It's short, easy to read, and perfect for someone currently experiencing depression. It's really helped me, and I thought I knew alot about my condition.
You are putting alot of pressure on yourself to find the "perfect" book. A book is only a book. There are many resources to understand and treat depression. Until he is ready to get some help there's not a whole lot you can do on his behalf. Sorry but I believe the desire to get better has to come from the person who is suffering, as it's a long, hard path, even with family and professional supports.
