It is an addictive behavior, and our reasons for doing it are pretty similar to other people's reasons for other addictive behaviors. It becomes how we cope with stuff that we can't otherwise cope with because we haven't learned healthy ways to deal with things. And the more we use addictive coping methods, the less likely are we to learn other ways.
