Yeah, you definitely can get a copy of your birth certificate in the U.S. though a certified copy will cost you a pretty penny. I recently ordered a copy of my husband’s birth certificate when I realized we did not have one and was trying to get together a packet of important papers to take with us in case of evacuation. Since I live near Houston, hurricane evacuations are seeming to become more and more common these last few years. I don’t know if we didn’t need his birth certificate to get married (if just the social security card sufficed?) or if we somehow just lost his. I think I needed either his whole or last 4 digits of the social security number to order it, but I remember it was expensive! He was born in California. I think a certified copy of a birth certificate is close to $100 for those born in Los Angelos County.
