I was taken off lithium due to the "two strike" rule...and started on Depakote...now at 1250mg/day and increasing to 1500mg. It definitely helps with rapid cycling/mixed episodes but not so effective for me for depressive episodes. It's not lithium, but it's okay.
The upside is NO side effects at all!
I'd recommend you give it a try...
