I always double check with the pharmacist if I have any concerns about meds. It's been the case that in every single instance where I've had a concern about medicine combinations, he got it right.
As far as the Serotonin Syndrome itself is concerned, it usually happens with people who are sensitive to side effects and whose bodies absorb the meds slowly, causing a build up of serotonin. The dosing of the meds also plays a part in the issue too.
If anything can go wrong medically, it will go wrong medically for me so regardless of the rarity, it's not really surprising that I'm actually dealing with it at this very moment (which why I even stumbled upon this thread in the first place, because I was looking for help with it). I'm on the highest dose of my ADHD med and was told to start an SSRI. It's my second day on the new med and for some reason the doctor blanked on the fact that he told me to take both meds at the same time so when added to my extreme sensitivity toward medicine side effects... Voila!
HOWEVER! Like I said before, I brought my concern to a pharmacist and they told me to contact my doctor immediately; the doctor, in turn, confirmed the medicine toxicity. While I was pretty sure I knew what the issue was, I would never diagnose myself with something like that and I wouldn't suggest it to my doctor(s) either. If I had any concerns before I started the med that it could possibly happen, I would have gone to the pharmacist immediately. They know meds and their interactions better than anything we can find on the internet.
