I have had serious problems with anger, rage, and fury. Extreme anger for me is a strong symptom of mania. When I am on a mood stabilizer that works my anger drops down to "normal". The only mood stabilizer that has worked for me is Lamictal. Yes, I know it is a popularly prescribed med these days, but that might be because it actually helps stabilize bipolar disorder.
As for Lamictal side effects, I have found that there are very few. An advantage to Lamictal is that it does not usually cause weight gain - unlike most psych meds. One possible disadvantage (for me) with regard to Lamictal is that it might possibly cause some "flatness"...even a tendency toward some mild depression. I don't like that feeling at all, so I'm going to speak with my pdoc about it when I see her this week. Maybe I need to lower the dose I'm on.

Anyway, I don't think anything truly takes away bipolar anger (which to me is so different than normal anger) except a mood stabilizer.
