I have seen this painting in person. When I was 14, we went to Spain and this magnificent artwork was in the Prado Museum in Madrid, positioned in a room at a 90 degree angle to a huge mirror. You could sit on a bench and see in the reflection, the figures standing at different distances. Diego Velasquez was a brilliant painter. He manipulated the light in this portrait in such a manner that you could see actual depth, from the Infanta in the front and those behind her and all of the way to the gentleman standing in the doorway.
I went in and sat on the bench. I could not believe what I was seeing. I was speechless and have never forgotten that moment.
