I was watching a special series last night on the Mekong River,
http://www.asiasteps.com/archives/204 and they had a segment with a buddhist monk who "protected" an endangered series of flying fox bats (they look like little foxes with leather wings, very weird looking). The region they live in is poor and apparently they taste good barbecued so there's a bit of a problem as some people ignore the monk and kill the bats for food.
