Well... I'm sorry to say my personal experience has been one's friends... & even one's family... don't want to hear about one's mental health problems. Depending on how close they are to you, they may put up with it for a while. But they don't know what to say. And they have their own problems. So, sooner or later, they're going to do something similar to what you've described in your post.

Unfortunately I would have to say, in my opinion, there's no faster more certain way to drive people away than to keep talking them up with regard to your mental health problems (physical / medical problems are probably not far behind.) That is simply one of the reasons why seeing a counselor or therapist can be important. They're getting paid to listen to you.
