In 1981 when I graduated high school I wanted to put a purple streak in my hair (school color). There were no (none at all) "alternative" hair colors commercially available. I asked my friend's sister, who was a stylist, to special-order a little tube of purple hair dye for me. So yes; I walked across the stage with the purple streak in my hair.
At some point (mid-'90's) Fudge put out a line of alt colors (Fudge was the BEST) and Manic Panic became available on the west coast. When I go to the beauty supply store I am

at all the colors available!
Long story short, I have dyed my hair every color there is (seriously; I'm not exaggerating) except black, only because black would look bad with my pale skin tone.
These days I'm pleased with my platinum blonde shaded in to complement my white-greys. Although every once in a while I get bored and put a streak of rose gold in it. But that washes out really quickly.
