my first thought would be because that's how they do it on social media and social media triggers some users (including myself), so they wouldn't want that as the name of the button

I think one of problems with 'like', is that it tends to encourage a vote up/down reaction mentality, whereas here, thanks/hugs are used to signal recognition/empathy, as much as to indicate agreement.
Partly because of this, I'm much more likely to acknowledge a post here from someone I don't know/about a subject I may not be particularly knowledgeable on, simply in order to let a poster know that they're not alone.
