To show empathy - if someone writes of having a hard time, tagging with a hug is an indication of understanding, whereas a thanks might indicate greatfulness for bringing the subject up/being strong enough to do so.
The absence of a thank/hug here is less indicative of rejection/disagreement than a the absence of a like/thumbs up might be on other social media.
