i have heard that there is no official tribe named 'Lakota' .. i was a little confused, but is it that 'Lakota' is a place, like an ideal? ... rather than a 'name' for a group of people?
thought you might have a perspective on that....

Lakota is a tribe - "Sioux" isn't a tribe. Actually, they are considered sovereign nations by the U.S. government. The Lakota, Nakota, and Dakota Nations are grouped together as "Sioux" (which is a french term for "snake").
Each nation has bands. I believe the Lakota have seven of them (Oglala, Brule, etc.)

The Oglala Lakota or Oglala Sioux, meaning "to scatter one's own" in Siouan, live in the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota bordering Nebraska and 50 miles east of Wyoming, the second largest reservation in the United States. The reservation has broadly three parts, pine covered hills and ridges, grassy plains and a desert area. All three parts are noted for natural beauty. The Oglala Sioux see themselves primarily as part of the Lakota or Sioux people.

the people i knew were in Valentine Nebraska, the same Oglala mentioned in the artilce link.. alive, but suffering...
and so, this is a group of people from my perspective who need my supportive consideration...
words do have several meanings to different people.... names are just attempting to identify a group.. the error is when we assign a general identity to large groups..... people are people.... with heart and feelings....
the disconnection of massive industry has made eyes myopic... these people have suffered a very long time...
no one individual is perfect, no tribe, no human race....
we are all fallable and commit errors at times and forgiveness is the quintissential pathway to transcendence form past mistakes imho
war machinery has proven its neccessity, but, we, as people can never afford to forget the cost of life.....
