I didn't have a choice to jump in the cellular phone user market. In 1992 Hurricane Andrew wiped us out (South Florida) and the only communications were ham radio and cellular phones.
I'm with you about those crazy drivers holding a phone, eating and talking and driving at the same time. No wonder they have more accidents. We in S Fl passed laws against this, but the county commissions negated the vote.

I guess the insurance companies liked the ability to charge higher premiums?
Most of the conversations I hear (in the elevators etc) are just chit chat, boring and annoying both.
It really doesn't matter if they hold the phone or not, it's where their mind is while talking. You can make a game of it if you want to, because these people are generally mindless to what they are doing physically... you can usher them out of the elevator before their floor, hold your hand up to make them pause physically while you pass, or just laugh when they laugh as though everyone can hear their conversation.
Even though I am trained to talk and drive safely, I pull off the road to talk on the cell phone when an important call comes in. (Important meaning from a doctor, usually.)
