Well, just because someone doesn't care to sit and talk on the phone doesn't necessarily mean the person is shallow. Actually, sometimes the people that talk and talk and gossip etc., are the ones that are shallow and have nothing better to do or don't have lives and other interests other than gossiping etc.

My mother is hyper vigilant. She will analyze and dissect someone’s words and behavior exploring the true meaning, a read between the lines person. I have learned to be like this from her. I have to admit, she’s always been right. She digs to the underlying truth of one’s motivation, and they always eventually show themselves and she was right. She’s not all negative. She will say, for example, that someone is doing something because they’re bored. I remember her saying when a certain boy would finally call me, that ‘he got to the letter of our last name in their phone book’.

My ‘shallow’ sister is of a completely different nature. She does not think like this. She has no patience for anything, a very hyper person, probably ADHD.

I can get along fine with my sister as long as I never try to get into any discussion of emotions. One time, when I was severely depressed, I reached out to her and she was completely unsympathetic. She triggered me. So, I won’t reach out to her again, ever.

The read between the lines way of my mother has made me totally neurotic. I didn’t know it was not what everybody does. I thought it was normal. I’m trying to do less of that, but it is so ingrained in me. It’s a survival mechanism, I have learned, to avoid danger. It may have helped me in life, yes, I’m sure it has.
