Do you shop at Aldi? Groceries are super cheap there. I do a lot of shopping there. When running low on cash I live on chicken drumsticks I get from there. They're not hard to cook either. Just put some olive oil on them and spices/herbs, put them on a sheet pan that has been sprayed with cooking spray, oven on 400F and cook for 35-40 mins. A big bag of potatoes is cheap there so if you start the oven, put the potatoes in to bake, then put the chicken in 30 mins later, it's a pretty easy meal to make. I've gotten super lazy with cooking. There's also this site that has a lot of really cheap meals to make and using this site is how I actually learned how to cook. Budget Bytes - Delicious Recipes Designed for Small Budgets

I also buy food at surplus stores. The packages might be messed up but it's cheap. You can find some interesting items at surplus stores. Dollar stores also have food.

Do you have a catholic charities in your city? I worked there and sometimes they help out and they usually have food pantries. Food pantries could actually be a big help to you. Most cities usually have multiple ones. Most though you can only go once a month but they give you a lot of food.

Do you have a used bookstore in town? When I want to buy a book I go there. My last haul I got 5 books for $17 and the books are normally $8 something a piece.
