Pets, if you like them and you're in a position to have them. Dogs take the most time because they have to be walked and exercised (You get lots of love back). Cats are the easiest furry pets. Actually rats make great pets if you're prepared to clean a cage, but most importantly give them a lot of attention outside their cage every day. Really, they like to be petted and they'll even learn their names and apparently mazes you could set up with blocks.
Birds have the cage problem again and they're not cuddly, but they are entertaining. Aquariums take up a surprising amount of time but it's a fun hobby to get into. A goldfish in a bowl doesn't count.
I am heavy into politics--reading and watching and bemoaning things on the phone. I can't say that it's a happy place to hang out these days, but it uses up a lot of time. As someone said the library usually has things going on and it's filled with murder mysteries among many other things.
