I’ve never — never, ever, ever — heard of anyone suffering a vegetative state from an overdose of any hallucinogens.
If I were you, before you accept the tale as true, I would seek more collaboration. Sounds like an urban legend to me; I’ve heard a lot of them involving LSD/going insane/acid given to those under pretense.
Certainly some people have ‘bad trips’ and suffer from psychological symptoms during one, but... in the 1960-1970’s the most ludicrous claim circulating was that using LSD would make on ‘jump out of windows.’ Maybe a handful did. But if everyone who tripped jumped through windows to their deaths we baby boomers would be scarce!

actually here in NY one of the common problems with acid (LSD) over dose is coma (vegetative state), hypothermia, and death, and if the person does come out of their vegetative state (coma) there is serious brain damage, some end up in long term nursing care.
I have a relative who took an over dose of LSD accidentally and is now in the state hospital most likely in a permanent vegetative state (coma), if he "wakes up" he will most likely have the functionality and mental abilities of a 2 year old.
