I have a relative who took an over dose of LSD accidentally and is now in the state hospital most likely in a permanent vegetative state (coma), if he "wakes up" he will most likely have the functionality and mental abilities of a 2 year old.

Hmm. I did a LexisNexis search and found only a handful (8) instances since 1974 where death was attributed to LSD (specifically) overdose.
Didn’t find any reports of LSD being the direct cause of coma but rather rare instances of medically induced comas because of physical manifestations such as, yes, hyperthermia, amongst other physical causations damaging organs (the brain being the most likely as without oxygen the brain quickly degenerates).
Sad to say it, but it’s doubtful that your relative will awaken — oxygen loss can cause permanent and irreversible brain damage.
I’m still a bit skeptical in re the OP (the post not the poster!): I have no experience, nor could I find other’s experiences, of trips lasting for weeks, or instances of gonzo-doses resulting in insanity. Temporary psychosis, yes, anxiety, etc., but nothing permanent.
I’m a skeptic and a bit of a cynic at heart. When I first read an FOAF (Friend of a friend) story my radar is engaged!
