FWIW, we're going through this very thing with our teenage son. Had to keep him home today, in fact.

Ha...yeah, we always joked that the never-ending problems with our son was God balancing the equation on account our other son is doing so well - honors, sports, clubs, self-sufficient, personality yadda, yadda...
The people down the road from us have perfect lives, perfect kids, must be helped by a well-off parent cause I don't think they work 10 hours a week between the two of them, no worries, no diseases and no heart, no compassion for others. So smug, so judgemental...
If anything, suffering enables us to have compassion for others.
Maybe its even a requirement.
