This is a pet peeve of mine. I work for a gas station that is part of a larger store. IF I go in the main store to go shopping no one will help me. They just tell me to find it myself or go in the back to look for it. And it really irritates me because I'm off the clock and I shouldn't be doing their darn job for them when I'm not being paid!

I don't think you are being a jerk at all. In fact you're a better person than me because I would tell her I'm not being paid to bag groceries!
