as far as i know a collateral is when a person in therapy is given a letter (or told face to face) from a person close to them, detailing the damages their behaviour has caused in their lives. ie - their illness's (or addiction's) "collateral damage"
so although there may be some therapeutic benefit to you in getting out hurts and frustrations, i think the goal is for him to realise the extent of the damages his illness/behaviour has caused.
