You may not be able to find out whether he is or is not a safe person on the first date. It may take a few more dates to find out. However, trust your instinct. If you get a strange gut feeling, then don't ignore it. I agree with others to just ask him general questions about himself at first. Also, be careful what you share with him about yourself.
