I’m not sure it’s an either/or situation. If I may geek out for a moment, it’s like how Sirius Black explained good vs bad people to Harry Potter: “The world isn’t split between good people and Death Eaters. We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on.”
I guess I’m more existential in the sense that I don’t think we “are” one way or another. We have a choice with each new situation — and with whatever choice we make, we determine who we are at that moment. But it’s never permanent. Which is good, because we’ve all been weak or chosen poorly in the past, but that doesn’t have to define us. The only definition of ourselves is what we do with the present moment.
