Actually if you go into the hospital voluntarily you can't just leave whenever you want to. You have signed yourself into THEIR care, and it is THEIR decision as to whether or not you are ready to leave.

Okiedokie is right. Even though I volunteered 5 times, I was not able to leave right when I wanted to. Usually the first day I get there I want to sign myself out but the doctor will talk and say he does not feel ready to let me go just yet. I usually take his advice, but while i was in there, there were a few who still wanted to leave and the doctor ordered, a court order and changed it from voluntary to involuntary, and they had to do the who court thing.in order to get out.

I have been in the hospital Voluntarily 5 times in the past 4 years. I admitted myself 2 times for attempted suicide under the hospitals recommendations. One time I went in because I wanted help (that didn't work) and the last two times I truly feared for my life ( I am chronically suicidal) I actually just got out of the hospital a week ago. (last Friday) I hate going there, I feel so ashamed to keep going back, when I mentioned this to the doctor, he said I did the right thing and to never be embarrassed, "because at least you are still alive."
