Maybe I feel partially irritated because it seems to me as if these people think the therapist wants to make small talk with them even though the session is over and their time is up. The therapist doesn't seem to encourage this practice, which makes me even more annoyed by the clients who persist.

My Ex-MC would have driven you crazy then, because *he* was often the one driving conversation while walking the client(s) back to the waiting room. Once I overheard him telling the client before us the same story he'd told us in a previous session about a nickname his daughter's friends had for him. (Which felt kinda weird, him sharing same story.) And he'd usually be chatting with us about something. Current T and ex-T don't walk clients to the waiting room (except for a very rare occasion with current T if he's running behind), so there's not that issue with them.
