Most of the survivors of Hurricane Andrew had to leave the area. Changing the environment was a great help in starting over and putting it behind. To continue to live in the area only constantly triggered (everyone who couldn't get out.) The area is vastly changed now, though not 100% good or rebuilt. Thousands did stay, or return. Some found solace in helping with the rebuilding. Some just plod along to live, as life requires it. The memories stay, but helping to file them away properly allows to find other things, enjoyable things, to use the space better.
The recent storm front that went through this week caused terrible winds and thunder and lightening. I opened the closet door, just in case the tornado warning sounded... or the memories of not only Andrew but of the day of my disabling injury overwhelmed me. Fortunately, I've finally begun to not always need to cower in fear. It's a long journey.
