me, yet again. rexulti is an 'atypical' neuroleptic/tranquilizer/'antipsychotic.' it (and drugs in that class...) are sometimes the best thing ever, especially in psychotic depression and/or agitated depression. other times...not so much.
a former psych once brought up amoxapine, for me. It is a tricyclic, in the same class as the Elavil, and it has some tranquilizer/neuroleptic action, too. I've never taken it, but I've read that -when- it is effective, it tends to lift mood fairly quickly, compared to other antidepressants.
any time a neuroleptic is in the mix, there's a risk of tardive dyskinesia and a number of other serious, sometimes permanent adverse effects. There's a test...The AIMS Test...to check for the early signs of tardive dyskinesia. Prescribers are supposed to have the test done every 6 months I think, maybe annually...but very few people actually receive a proper AIMS evaluation, in "the real world."
