While it’s true that it’s your dime and your time, if your therapist doesn’t feel like they are making any progress with you they have every right (and ethical responsibility) to refer you out.
Making goals for therapy is hard - i suck at it too. Some days my goal is to just stay alive, other days I have much loftier goals. If you’ve been seeing this therapist for awhile, they should be able to help you set some goals.
If you don’t even want to be there tho, a break from therapy might be exactly what you need right now.
