Actually I wonder if people really mean well.

They are better off not saying anything rather than the same platitudes that have been around for decades. Maybe people are afraid it could happen to them (It could) so they blame the victim. We seem to do that here. If society has a problem they don't know how to address or fix, they blame the victim. Look how we criminalized homelessness for decades. Now it's gotten so bad, I don't know how they can solve the "crisis" at it is suddenly called. (It's been a crisis forever but city officials thought of the homeless as lazy and responsible for their own situation)

And our culture is very unforgiving towards the unemployed. Christ, it's a Catch 22: You have a better chance of getting hired if you're already hired by someone. And the longer it goes on, the less likely you'll get hired.

I don't know, I have this pipe dream that maybe one day attitudes will change, like they have about gay marriage for example. People are unfairly stigmatized due to things they can't control. It's not up to you whether you get hired or not; it's up to them. And it's a subjective process.

And misleading statistics are a slap in the face. It's supposedly rosy out there.
