What are you doing to prepare for them? Have you been able to determine the outage is widespread (ie. neighbours, community). Or are they instead confined to your home/building?
I always have a flashlight and candles on hand for just in case such things happen. One can make a simple heater out of coffee cans and a candle. Also in my emergency drawer I have some activities to do like a deck of cards. It is always a good time to pick up a book too.
I don't recommend using your phone for activities other than a (calm) call to the power company to ensure they are aware of the outage. You need to conserve the battery on the phone for in case of an emergency.
As irritating and frightening as a power outage can be I try to look at it as an adventure. Afterall, I pay good money to camp for the very 'privilidge' of going without power.
