When I got home there was a message from my dad. I called him back and he seemed to be feeling a lot better. I think he's managed to get past his alcohol withdrawals on his own. Anyway, he said his friend is going to take him to his first AA meeting this week. I'm so relieved! I hope that helps him. I said to my dad, and my sister really agreed, that he is the type that would likely really enjoy AA. He's a social animal and AA is definitely a great place to socialize. He also loves to talk and tell stories. AA is a great place for that, too. Unlike me, he probably won't mind the religious aspect of it. He's not particularly religious, but he can "become" religious if it means some fun and socializing.

Great news!
Many people truly benefit from AA programs without getting into the "spiritual" aspect. It's traditional that if someone does not "believe in a Higher Power," that the person simply accept the fact that his/her sponsor believes. There is no requirement that every participant believe in anything.
It does sound like your dad might be a good match for the AA program. This is very exciting and I am sure this gives you some hope for your dad's recovery.
I have many alcoholic family members and I recall the excitement and the hope that filled my heart when they'd attended their first AA meeting.
I hope this is a great match for your dad!
