For both police and mental health professionals it's a reflection of the stress of the job. One of my dearest friends was a retired police officer with PTSD (result of his job.) What he told me is that the culture for police is to be "tough" and not seek out help for the horrible things they see in the course of their work.
For mental health professionals, we listen to other people's pain all day every day. Without good self-care people in thee profession are at risk of compassion fatigue (similar to complex PTSD). Some folks in the profession believe they ought to be able to heal themselves and refuse to ask for help.
