I've seen with my own eyes people who thought they would lose their productivity if they gave up their mania. It always turned out to be just the opposite. Though you think you do better with mania, it's just not true. Not only do you lose productivity when you do come down, you spend a lot of time spinning your wheels when you're "high".
Just my $0.02, but you really do need to treat both sides, IMHO.
