I had 5 years of Spanish in high school/ college. Could read but not converse well.
I went to Italy for 6 weeks & came home knowing almost as much Italian as I did Spanish.
The thing that I found personally is that I can't get the conversational part unless I am immersed in the language & forced to speak it in order to communicate so it becomes fluent.
