I don't think you are doing anything wrong (I have seen people wear much worse in public)--this is your mom's anxiety. Just today, when I went on an errand, I cut it short because I couldn't remember if I had locked the door (and my daughter may have been sleeping, didn't want to wake her). Now that we do not have a dog, I get scared about her being home alone in the middle of the day.
