Two weeks ago I was laid off from my sales and marketing job. I worked there for only six months. The company's sales were down 65% from this time last year. Last year's sales were actually a windfall created by changes in the petroleum industry. The boss built the staff up to 55 people. As of March 1, it is down to 35 people, and the company has a major cash flow problem.

A little background on me - I have been in my own businesses since 1983. Business is one of my passions. I had to close down my last business last fall due to my rheumatoid arthritis and financial problems.

At this point I have a lot of resumes out there. At 57, it is hard to find a job that I can actually do. Since I have RA, I can't take a job that requires a lot of physical activity. Companies are eager to hire 23-year-old college grads who can't punch their way out of a paper bag, but won't hire someone like me, who may not have a Bachelor's degree, but has the experience and the street smarts to help grow a business.

I am looking into many things right now. I have put out over 50 resumes this month. I do have two interviews scheduled for next week.

I am sure that everything will work out. My wife works for the school district in special education, and we have our medical benefits through the district.

Wish me luck...
