I could NOT stand up for myself. My mother, who was one of the popular girls when she was in school, either laughed (yes, laughed) or aggressively told me I'd better never get in any trouble at school or I'd be "in" for it. If I had it to do over again I'd use more of the attitude I have now and be done with it.
