try and put your fears behind you and make the call. Or feel the fear and just do it. The HMRC are pretty good and normally very helpful when I have dealt with them, I had a scenario 2 years back where I had been overtaxed for 2 years before it had been noticed and i got the whole lot back without any great deal of problem. It was almost £2,000 - kind of nice to get that back
