There's a way to deal with this in a professional manner. You shouldn't tell him you overheard his comment directly but you can ask for feedback on what you can improve on and what the expectations are. That way, you can do exactly what he wants you to do and then there's nothing he can say because he's the one that told you to do it. In the most professional terms, we call this covering your ***!
