I wouldn’t say that he “couldn’t perform”.

I would stress that he has a dysfunction that can be treated.

I would recommend that he start with a visit to a doctor.

If that resolves the dysfunction, great!

If not, I would recommend seeing a sex therapist.

ED is a known phenomenon. With treatment the prognosis is good.
