I can certainly empathise with you. I do both of these.
Our brains respond to protect us. I guess this is a big part of why normal therapies (and for me meds) don't help us.

You know, my first reaction is that the mind resorting to such a feeble and avoidant response is really sad and pitiful. That that's the best it can do.
But then, it shows that no matter how bad our self-image and inner critic may be, some part of us *does* care and wants to lessen the hurt. Wants to make it better.
It's like a small child trying to comfort an adult without any real understanding of why they are sad. And sometimes all the adult can do is smile sadly and hug them for trying and being human.
Maybe something to remember the next time your responses kick in ....
