Personally, I can point to both formal and informal tokens of "failure" or "non-success" in my life. My ability to feel anything, including "failure", is blunted.
It is too easy to find others who label us "failures" according to the way they see life and what they value. It can be exceptionally difficult to ignore what others think.  (And it can be exceptionally difficult to determine and then internalise what we ourselves value, particularly when we swim in a social ocean filled with those proffering their own values.)
Ultimately I lack confidence in my ability to answer my own questions. I want to help Mountainstream, though.

I think you are right about the social ocean.
We get cut off from social interaction by those with ego's whom find them selves superior to us.
Kindness and respect towards us has no value to them.
